ESKDALE GREEN
The village of Eskdale Green is located on the western side
of theLake District National Park and lies within the
Eskdale valley. At the head of this beautiful valley are some of the highest
peaks in the Lake District. To the north is the valley of Wasdale with Wastwater,
the most remote and deepest of the lakes. Southwards, over Birker Moor is
the lovely Duddon Valley made famous by Wordsworth's sonnets.
On the coast, only 6 miles away is the ancient Roman port of Ravenglass,
which is also the terminus of the narrow gauge steam railway which runs up
the Eskdale valley as far as
the tiny village of Boot. The railway,
visible from the house, is a major attraction both for children and railway
enthusiasts. Irton Road Station, only a few minutes walk from the house is
a great boon to those wanting to enjoy the many and varied walks in this lovely
valley without having to use the car.
The village, which has a general store and post office, can be reached by a footpath across the fields. Within walking distance there are public houses at each end of the village, which serve evening meals.
